Nice job building the bass. Can I commission one from you too? I would like one like this (nice wood) and heavier laquer (maybe fabulon).

By the way, my favorite thing about the photo's is the totally trashed workroom in the background. Very cool!

John, this recording brings you in a new and interesting direction. I like it. There are some really great things going on here.

1) The solemn and somewhat morose feeling (slow tempo, changing tempo, descending chord progression, minor key) is a sound that I very often listen to and like.

2) The morose feeling applied to this lyrical subject is interesting because it implies that you have been let down by your religion. I am not sure if you wanted this, but it’s a great point of view even if you had not set out to do this.

3) I love the guitar sound, the Hammond, bass, and piano sounds are perfect.

4) Doubled voice tracks liven up the vocal track.

5) The wavering vocal trail-offs sound really good.

Although the slow and unsteady tempo adds to the feeling of the song, there are some spots where the instrument attacks are far off. This kills the pulse some.

I have some ideas for this if you’re interested in hearing them.

John, this song does not get the attention it deserves. We should develop this one.

I played this on my studio monitors and really enjoyed the quality of the recording. The Dumbeg and the tamborine are a nice touch.
Although, I might boost the levels on the vocals just a bit. Good to see that you're pushing the limit of your equipment in the service of such great sounding music!

You and Ron are sounding real good together. I'll say you're ready for the open mic! Let me know when it will be, and I'll try to take a quick flight into town.

That's so funny. I can totally hear the dulcimer sound in there.

Sounds like you made a real strong musical connection over that week. And then to think that music like this could never have been... Here's to small treasures salvaged from forgotten wallets!

Great going!

I like this song in the context of Mahopac, our home town in New York.

Your voices and instrumentation blend most pleasurably! It seems like playing the mandolin is similar to playing lead guitar. Sounds like you two have hit on a really good process for getting together and simply making good music, simply. No midi. No overdubs. Very nice.

I'm looking forward to hearing more songs from the duet.

Thanks guys!

Todd. You're so right about that Top Gun sound. I wanted a lead with a lot of sustain, and that's what I found first. I'll experiment with different effects on the guitar and see how it turns out. You're also right about the one flubbed major chord in the rhythm. I'll fix that (although I hope to keep the same tremolo sound).

Manoog. I'm glad you like the 6/8 meter. There are words, but I don't know them. I never heard the song... and I think that's a strength.

I can totally hear what you mean about sprucing up the drums. I'll give it a try. Thanks!
